List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

No new courses will be required.

Supply support letter from the Library, Dean, and/or Department Chair if needed

(all new majors/minors will need a support letter from the appropriate administrator.)

Supply a resolution for all new majors/programs; name changes of colleges, departments, degrees; transfer of departments from one college to another; creation of new departments; requests for permanent status.  See example of resolutions.

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

The proposed new concentration, Family and Consumer Sciences Education/Fashion and Apparel Studies, within the major supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education. In particular, the required coursework will help student "attain effective skills in oral and written communication, quantitative reasoning and the use of information technology" (Goal# l ). As many of the required courses include both individual and group assignments, students will thus "Be able to work and learn independently and collaboratively"( Goal #3). Finally, through placements and student teaching, students will "Develop the ability to integrate academic knowledge with experiences that extend the boundaries  f the classroom"( Goal #7).

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

Email correspondence regarding impact of the changes on Fashion and Apparel Studies is attached.

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

There is a nationwide shortage of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) educators. These educators teach in many different content areas including Early Childhood Education, Human Services, Fashion & Apparel Studies, and Culinary Arts. The current concentration for the FCS Education concentration of the Human Services major focuses on Human Services and Early Childhood Education. The concentration will be retained and an additional concentration will be added with a focus on Human Services and Fashion and Apparel Studies.  The proposed changes will allow graduates to be certified in Delaware as Family and Consumer Sciences teachers under Title 14 of the Delaware Administrative Code (available online at http://regulations.delaware.gov/AdminCodle4/1ti1t5l e0 0/l5 54.shtml).

The new concentration will be called Family and Consumer Sciences Education with an Apparel Studies Concentration. This concentration will have the same core courses as the existing Family and Consumer Sciences Concentration. HDFS 401 Foundations of Human Sexuality will replace UAPP 225 Introduction to Public Policy. Human Services majors are required to take another course that focuses on public policy: HDFS 402 Child and Family Policy. FCS Education teachers are sometimes required to teach about human sexuality and sexual development. Therefore, HDFS 401 is deemed to be more important than UAPP 225 for these students. In the addition, the majority of the ECE curriculum courses will be replaced with a Minor in Fashion History and Culture.

Note: There are two errors in the current catalog requirements for the concentration:

Subject: RE: Family and Consumer Sciences Education program change

HI Lynn,

We’re happy to have the students join our minor and hope a lot will!  In fact, if it would be valuable to have the minor advisor, Dilia Lopez-Gydosh speak to any of the students, I suspect she’d be happy to.  Fyi, we have removed FASH 114 as a requirement for our APD and FM majors, so are a little uncertain about whether we will be teaching it in the future (and what we will put in its place in the minor).  But please proceed with the change and we’ll accommodate your students in whatever change is made regarding that just like the other minor students.

Thanks,

Marsha

Subject: Family and Consumer Sciences Education program change

Marsha,

We have had an FCS Education concentration in the Human Services major for a couple of years. The requirements include FASH 114 and 122, but the focus of the content courses is on teaching secondary students about Early Childhood Education (ECE) and Human Services. We don’t have many students in the concentration, but one of them and a couple of prospective students have been interested in focusing on Fashion and Apparel Studies, rather than ECE. Our faculty have decided to offer a second concentration of the FCS Ed concentration that includes the Minor in Fashion History and Culture. In other words, for the new concentration, we are replacing the majority of the ECE courses with the minor. The attached planning guide includes the changes (see the lower part of the right column). We don’t expect many students to choose this option (probably no more than one per year). Please let me know if you approve allowing our students who choose this concentration to add the Minor in Fashion History and Culture. If you need any other information, please let me know. Thanks!

Lynn

The University Council on Teacher Education approved the proposed revisions to the above program, one that will allow students to concentrate in Early Childhood Education or Fashion and Apparel Studies.  The Council was enthusiastic about providing students with the new concentration --and wishes the Department success in implementing the revised program.
