We are revising the
existing Major by adding two new languages, but we are not creating new
courses. We are using courses that already exist in our curriculum.
For the History
component we are adding two courses to the general history requirement,
allowing students to choose between Western Civilization and World History. The
courses added are:

Students in this major
will acquire knowledge and skills that support 8 of the 10 goals of
undergraduate education. The study of the history and the culture of a specific
linguistic region in the world support goals #2 (Learn to think critically to
solve problems), #5 (Understand the diverse ways of thinking that underlie the
search for knowledge in the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences), #6
(Develop the intellectual curiosity, confidence, and engagement that will lead
to lifelong learning) #8 (Develop the ability to integrate academic knowledge
with experiences that extend the boundaries of the classroom), and # 10
(Develop an international perspective in order to live and work effectively in
an increasingly global society). The study of a foreign language will support
goals: #1 (Attain effective skills in oral and written communication, and the
use of information technology), and #3 (Be able to work and learn both
independently and collaboratively).

During the
past academic year (2011-12) the Undergraduate Studies Committees of the
History Department and the Foreign Languages Department carried out an
evaluation of the status of the History/Foreign Language Major. This major was
created several years ago when the foreign languages in highest demand and the
inventory of courses offered by both Departments were different than what they
are at present. In the evaluation process we discovered that in the last five
years the largest portion of HIST/FLLT majors were in History/Spanish and
History/Classics, in a lesser number in French, German, and Russian. At the
same time we have been noticing an increase in the demand of the study of
Chinese and Japanese history and languages.
Based on these findings, both Committees discussed the need to introduce
changes to adapt the major to the new trends in history and foreign language
study as well as the availability of active courses in the inventory of both Departments.
