List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

No new courses are required.

Supply support letter from the Library, Dean, and/or Department Chair if needed

(all new majors/minors will need a support letter from the appropriate administrator.)

This is a revision to an existing major that will require no new Library resources.

Supply a resolution for all new majors/programs; name changes of colleges, departments, degrees; transfer of departments from one college to another; creation of new departments; requests for permanent status.  See example of resolutions.

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

Via the individual courses, the revised major supports the following:

1.      Attain effective skills in (a) oral and (b) written communication, (c) quantitative reasoning, and (d) the use of information technology.

2.      Learn to think critically to solve problems.

3.      Be able to work and learn both independently and collaboratively.

4.      Develop the ability to integrate academic knowledge with experiences that extend the boundaries of the classroom.

5.      Expand understanding and appreciation of human creativity and diverse forms of aesthetic and intellectual expression.

6.      Develop an international perspective in order to live and work effectively in an increasingly global society.

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

Letters of support from Chair of the Economics Department and the Director of the Environmental Studies Program are included below. We opted to add one other course as suggested by Dr. Hoffman. We opted to keep the name as we originally proposed. .

Subject: Revision to Resource Economic Major

Saul - attached is the "Revision to Major" form describing the changes to our Resource Economics major that Titus mentioned to you. Basically, the name will be changed to Environmental and Resource Economics to better reflect the content of the major. Also, additional required courses in the environmental area will be added. With careful course selection and one additional ECON course, students that complete the major will qualify for a minor in Economics - this should encourage enrollment in your Department's courses.

An email response with your support of these changes would be appreciated.

Have a great TG - Steve

From Saul Hoffman:

Steve

By this email, I am pleased to provide support for the changes that you are proposing to the major in Environmental and Resource Economics.

As I discussed with you previously, one of the required courses in your program, ECON300, may eventually be phased out if, as we anticipate, we eliminate the BA option of our major in the 2012-2013 academic year.  Substitute courses, including ECON251, ECON255 (proposed new this year), and ECON301 will continue to be available.

I also want to point out that your revised curriculum, which includes seven courses in Economics, would satisfy the requirements for a minor in economics.  I have pasted the requirements here:

REQUIRED COURSES IN MINOR:
Six courses (18 credits) with a grade of C- or better, including ECON 151, ECON 152; one of the following three courses: ECON 251, ECON 300, or ECON 301; and three additional courses at or above the 300-level.

Del - attached is the "Revision to Major" form describing the changes to our Resource Economics major that we are submitting. Basically, the name will be changed to Environmental and Resource Economics to better reflect the content of the major. Also, additional required courses in the environmental area will be added. With careful course selection and one additional ECON course, students that complete the major will qualify for a minor in Economics.

I do not see a direct impact on the Environmental Science major as there is not an economics concentration, nor the Environmental Study program as it is a BA Degree, but wanted you to be aware of the changes.

An email response with your support of these changes would be appreciated.

From Del Levia:

Hi Steve,

I write in support of the content revisions to the Resource Economics major. I see no conflicts with the Environmental Science or Environmental Studies majors.

I do, however, have a slight concern over the name change to "Environmental and Resource Economics" as it could potentially be confusing to students with the large number of majors and programs that preface their titles with the word "Environment". This was a topic of intense debate several years ago in Committee discussions when the Energy and Environmental Policy and Environmental Studies majors were formed. Many students are confused about differences between Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Soil Science, Environmental Engineering, and Energy and Environmental Policy to name a few. Your name change could muddy the waters even further. Perhaps, a better name would be "Resource and Environmental Economics".

So, in sum, I do support the major change on the whole but believe that switching the order of "Resource" and "Environmental" to "Resource and Environmental Economics" would be advantageous for you and the marketing of the revised major. I wish you luck in moving forward with your proposed revisions.

Best wishes,
Prof. Del Levia

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The majority of the students that do the Resource Economics major and the majority of the prospective students for the major express an interest in a more direct focus on environmental issues, analysis and policy. Our Department has the faculty teaching and research expertise to capitalize on that interest. We offer the courses that can provide an excellent of the environmental economics. There are no other environmental economics majors with the proposed level of rigor and economic training offered at UD. The current Concentration in Resource Economics will be deleted. The current Concentration in Sustainable Development will be retained. A major can earn a Minor in Economics.
