List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

No change from original major.

The Health Studies degree contributes to the following goals of undergraduate education through the curriculum including the required practicum experience. Students are required to gain skills in written communication and information technology (Goal 1). Through the required practicum, students learn to solve problems independently, and also learn to work collaboratively with others at sites like hospitals, fitness centers and other work places where they work with other professionals and staff members.  (Goals 2 and 3).  Students gain exposure to ethics through the required ethics class, but also through much of the entire program, as they are required to think and reflect on the concepts of health and wellness as it affects them, their community, and their world. (Goal 4). The knowledge gained in the academic coursework allows students to understand the concepts of health, wellness, and fitness as it pertains to their lives and the lives of others outside the classroom. (Goal 7).

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

None

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The Health Studies major met an unfilled need in the College of Health Studies. Students who have a broad interest in various areas of health and wellness now are able to declare a major that better meets their needs and allows them to pursue a variety of professional and graduate schools as well as a variety of professional health-related careers. The recent addition of the joint program with Thomas Jefferson University in Occupational therapy provides an opportunity to expand the Health Studies major in an intentional and specific direction. In addition, the possible new joint program with PCOM for a Physician Assistant’s preparatory program will give another option for growth of the Health Studies major.
