List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

No new courses required.  We are proposing to drop a required course which will allow students to have 4 more elective credits.  The revised curriculum will still meet the requirements set forth by our accrediting agency for dietetics.

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revisedcurriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

The revised curriculum will continue to support the 10 goals of undergraduate education as the major currently does.

This concentration revision is related only the mechanics of the curriculum and does not change the manner in which the 10 goals are already addressed.

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

Biology Department will lose ~5 students per year in BISC208.

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

Deletion of BISC208 requirement

We currently allow students the option of meeting their biology requirement in 1 of 2 ways: taking BISC 104 and 106 or the BISC207/208 sequence and BISC276.  We are proposing to delete the BISC208 requirement for several reasons.  One, the content of BISC208 is not material that APN students need for their major courses.  BISC208 focuses heavily on animal and plant physiology as well as the principles of ecology.  BISC207 covers structure and function of cells as well as proteins, DNA, and RNA.  These topics are felt to be more germane for students in the APN track.  Second, BISC276 requires one biology prerequisite (either BISC207 or 208).  Therefore, students do not need both courses to take BISC276.  Students will still have the option of the two biology tracks however they are now equal in the number of required courses and both options teach material necessary for the APN major. Finally, students will continued to be advised that both BISC207 and 208 are necessary for completion of the biology minor.

Deletion of NTDT445 requirement

NTDT445 is a teaching methods designed specifically for our Dietetics track.  Historically, we have required APN majors to take this course to expose them to a skill set that would enable them to teach nutrition.  However, the career goals of our APN majors do not typically include teaching.  Secondly, the APN major does not lead to a credential which would allow these individuals the ability to legally teach nutrition and dietetics to the public.  In order to meet the minimum requirement for 300/400 level courses in NTDT, we therefore would require 12 elective 300/400 NTDT courses, not the current 9.  This revision would allow students to select 300/400 levels courses that are more applicable to their area of interest.

Correction There is also a correction to the listing for a class titled Food Science (was FOSC305, is ANFC305).

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)
