Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

  1. Make PSYC-Introduction to Psychology a Core Prerequisite requirement of the Medical Scholars Program This requested is submitted in anticipation of pending MCAT changes and medical school core-prerequisite requirements.  Commencing in 2015-16 medical school core-prerequisite requirements will include course work in “Introductory Psychology”.
  2. Add HLTH241 Ethical Aspects of Healthcare as a Bioethics option within the Medical Scholars Program The inclusion of HLTH241 Ethical Aspects of Health Care within the BIOETHICS section of the Medical Scholars Program is sought to increase course options for students choosing the BIOETHICS track of the Medical Scholars Program.  Note that PHIL241 is not cross listed with this course.
  3. Eliminate PSOC343 as a cross listed course with SOCI343 within the Humanities and Social Science options of the Medical Scholars Program POSC343 has been dropped as a cross listed course with SOCI343 Society, Politics and Healthcare.  This action will update the listing of course requirements/options within the Medical Scholars Program.
  4. Add WOMS414 Women and Gender in Healthcare and WOMS203 Contemporary Moral Problems to course options within the Medical Scholars Program of Study This requested is submitted to seek additional course options in the Humanities/Social Science and Bioethics tracks of the Medical Scholars Program.  Note that WOMS414 and WOMS203 would serve as most appropriate course selections for students pursuing admission into medical schools and other healthcare professions.
  5. Make CHEM527-Introductory Biochemistry a requirement rather than an option of the MSP “Core-Prerequisite Courses” Currently this course is listed as one of three options in the MSP where approximately 90-100% of our MSP students (N=12-16) enroll in CHEM527 each year.  Note that in 2015/16 the AAMC has indicated that Biochemistry will become a major part of the MCAT for pre-medical studies students.  This requested change is in anticipation of the pending MCAT changes and medical school core-prerequisite requirements
  6. Include HDFS349 as a Cross Listed course with SOCI349 within the Humanities and Social Science options of the CAS Medical Scholars Program  We would like to add HDFS349 Aging & Society as a cross listed course with SOCI349 course in our Medical Scholars Program (MSP) Humanities and Social Science options.  This would serve to update our current Medical Scholars Program listing of curricular requirements/ options.

  1. Request to designate  either MATH221 or MATH241 as a math requirement for students in the CAS Medical Scholars Program We would like to designate either MATH221 Calculus I or MATH241 as addressing the math requirement for students in the Medical Scholars Program (MSP).  Currently the only MSP math requirement listed is MATH241.  Most medical schools require math through calculus and MATH221 or 241 meet this need.
