List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

MEDT 462 Experiential Learning- This course will satisfy the university requirement for a Discovery Learning Experience for those in this major.  This will be a capstone course that will challenge the student to assimilate all of his/her undergraduate coursework into the context of actual clinical experience to prepare for a career in healthcare. The reflections and critical thinking skills demonstrated during this course will be a measure of the student’s preparedness to advance to professional or graduate education in his/her chosen area.

This course will be the final reflective component of the volunteer experiences accumulated throughout the student’s undergraduate years in preparation for graduate or professional school in a healthcare field. Evidence of critical thinking and knowledge of healthcare concepts will be demonstrated through an ePortfolio and a formal summary paper.

MEDT 398 Body Fluid Analysis- Study of routine urinalysis examination, renal function and body fluid testing procedures. This course is the same course as MEDT 400 with the laboratory portion of the course removed.

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

The proposed major in Medical Diagnostics supports the following goals of undergraduate education:

1. Attain effective skills in (a) oral and (b) written communication, (c) quantitative reasoning,

and (d) the use of information technology.

2. Learn to think critically to solve problems.

3. Be able to work and learn both independently and collaboratively.

4. Engage questions of ethics and recognize responsibilities to self, community, and society at

    large.

5. Understand the diverse ways of thinking that underlie the search for knowledge in the arts,

    humanities, sciences and social sciences.

6. Develop the intellectual curiosity, confidence, and engagement that will lead to lifelong

    learning.

7. Develop the ability to integrate academic knowledge with experiences that extend the

    boundaries of the classroom.

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

Permissions attached from BISC, CHEM, PHYS, FREC and KAAP

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The Medical Diagnostics curriculum incorporates the core lecture courses from the Medical Technology major with selected courses from other scientific disciplines to provide a solid foundation for students pursuing graduate and professional degrees in healthcare related professions.

In support of this proposal, recent articles in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology describe the need for students pursuing medical school or graduate education in healthcare to gain a knowledge base in laboratory medicine to better prepare them for these post-baccalaureate programs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “An integral component of care is laboratory medicine, which extends across research, clinical…, and public health settings.” As noted in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology, “The role of laboratory testing in the care of patients is uniformly recognized as a critical component of modern medical care.” (Smith, B., 2010)

Dr. Michael Wilson states in his article titled Educating Medical Students in Laboratory Medicine published in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology 2010, “…there are gaps in this education that defy common sense and reason, one of which is the lack of a requirement for formal education in laboratory medicine at all medical schools.”
