List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

HLPR 211/UAPP211         Introduction to Public Health

HLPR 222/UAPP222         Introduction to Epidemiology

HLPR 233/UAPP233         Introduction to Global Health

The three required courses were based on recommendations for developing public health programs that are provided through the Curriculum Guide for Undergraduate Public Health Education Version 3.0 by the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) and the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). This curriculum guide assisted in the development of the minor’s three core courses and provided insight on the electives to offer. The curriculum guide is designed to assist faculty with providing students with the essential learning outcomes presented by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) in their Liberal Education and American’s Promise (LEAP) initiative.  Public Health, Epidemiology, and Global Health are the primary constructs of undergraduate public health programs.

In addition these courses are based on criteria established by the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) and the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) and developed with guidance and input from the Public Health Planning Committee comprised of UD faculty who collaborated with Thomas Jefferson University to further aid in the development of the minor.

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

The minor in Public Health is compatible with the Academic Priorities of the University by addressing the following goals of undergraduate education:

Attain effective skills in oral and written communication, quantitative reasoning, and the use of information technology

Learn to think critically to solve problems

Be able to work and learn both independently and collaboratively

Engage questions of ethics and recognize responsibilities to self, community and society at large

Understand the diverse ways of thinking that underlie the search for knowledge in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences

Understand the foundations of United States Society including the significance of its cultural diversity

Develop an international perspective in order to live and work effectively in an increasingly global society

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

See attached proposal and letters of permission and support.

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

Understanding the issues and complexities of population health and the public’s health is becoming more of a requirement in contemporary society.  According to the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) and the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), the ability to provide undergraduate students from all disciplines exposure and appreciation of public health concerns and issues has become important, and promoted as a need for a quality education.  By providing a minor, UD students will have that opportunity.  It will also help expose students to this career path, and supplement some students’ ability to pursue medical careers in a more learned fashion. The minor also contributes to UD-TJU collaborations and enhances future possibilities.

Regarding collaborations with TJU, the Public Health minor was developed with input and guidance from the director of the MPH program, Dr. Rob Simmons, director of Family and Community Medicine, Dr. James Plumb, and global health faculty member, Dr. Francis Barcchi.  TJU also provided funding to UD to support the development of the minor.  Other specific contributions included curriculum input and review, core course content review, guest speaker contributions, and development of a practicum experience site list. TJU will also participate on the community advisory committee to be established for the minor.
