Major in Hospitality Industry Studies

Areas of Focus

The original proposal that went through the department and college committees comprised a single major with only areas of focus that students can undertake. We think we stepped into the term “concentration” because there is no formal option for areas of focus.

The purpose of the major is to provide a broad slate of choices for students who seek to specialize in support areas and the suggested courses are meant to guide them through into their areas of interest. This is done at the advising level, with formal documentation provided by the department. We have observed that students not wanting an operations-driven career do not know at the start of their degrees as to what their specific areas of interest are. For example, students can pursue Human Resource Management as an area of interest. By proposing formal concentrations, the choice of students to pursue specific career paths is impeded.

Potential areas of focus listed are Transaction Advisory Services, Hospitality Sales and Marketing and Hospitality Information Management as of now.

We would like to retain this as a single proposal with options for students to choose an Area of Focus. Students will be provided with active guidance and counseling and supported by documentation and guides set up by the department.
