Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

No other units are affected by the proposed changes. All coursework consists of graduate courses offered and staffed by the School of Education.

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

The School of Education currently offers a "patchwork" of degrees that lead to secondary certification in certain content areas, most under the M.Ed. framework and with little consistency across concentrations. This program will create a single degree program that leads to initial certification in secondary education in the Science, Mathematics, or English content areas. By requiring a strong content background for admission to the program (that which would be typically covered by either an undergraduate or post-graduate degree in the content area of certification), this program is able to condense the entirety of pre-professional training and field experience into one calendar year (including summer and winter sessions).

This high-intensity, quick-turnaround program will be attractive to several classes of potential students. The first class is younger students who have recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree in a certification area, but do not have a teaching credential, either because their institution does not have a secondary education program or because they decided to pursue secondary education too late in their undergraduate program. The second class of potential applicants are career-switchers and recent retirees, people who have a large amount of experience in their own discipline but are interested in changing from a career in private industry to one in public education. For both kinds of applicants, this new program should be highly attractive, especially compared to the programs the School of Education currently offer, which range from two to four years in length.

This program can also be used as a mechanism by which to establish stronger and more durable partnerships with local schools and school districts. The intense field experience that the program includes will cement personal relationships between our teacher candidates and the teachers and administrators at school sites. There will be the opportunity to pursue professional development and other sorts of potentially powerful interactions where the University can bring helpful expertise to bear on the partner schools.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree is a thirty-three-credit-hour degree intended for students who wish to become certified in teaching at the secondary level (grades 6-12) in a single subject. Students will learn how to lead a classroom, plan lessons, assess student learning, reflect on their own teaching, and improve their practice over time. The program will prepare students to teach Science (specialized by content area), Mathematics or English.
