List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

None.

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

The change will have no impact on how the minor supports the 10 goals.

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

The change will impact the School of Education, which offers EDUC 259 Cultural Diversity in Community Contexts. Students enrolled in the HDFS minor will be allowed to take EDUC 259, which will increase enrollment. (Email approval for the change is attached at the end of this document.)

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

EDUC 259 Cultural Diversity in Community Contexts will be added to the Development within Diverse Communities concentration for the HDFS minor. This additional course fits the requirement of this concentration, given its clear focus on diverse communities.

EDUC 259 course description:

Examines roles and responsibilities of the classroom teacher through critical examination of field placement experiences in diverse community contexts. Topics include race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, social class, poverty and language.

Adding EDUC 259 would give students in the HDFS minor more options to fulfill the Development within Diverse Communities concentration of the minor. In addition, because EDUC 259 fulfills a requirement for Elementary Teacher Education majors, adding this option would allow ETE students with a Special Education concentration to complete the HDFS minor with only 15 additional credits. (Permission to add the HDFS minor as an option for ETE majors with a Special Education concentration is attached below.)

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.)

It’s great to hear that the HDFS faculty supported the proposal. I submitted a course revision proposal through the Course Inventory to change the restriction on EDUC 259 so that HDFS minor students can take the course. I will ask Carol if I can present the special education proposal to UCTE in December. It looks like we’re good to go!

Laura,

The HDFS faculty voted unanimously at our meeting on Friday to approve adding EDUC 259: Cultural Diversity in Community Contexts as a choice for the Development within Diverse Communities requirement for the HDFS minor so that ETE students with a Special Education concentration will be able to add the HDFS minor as an option. We felt that the content of EDUC 259 was an excellent fit for the requirement.

Can you please verify that your department will allow students in the HDFS minor who are not ETE majors take EDUC 259 if they choose to use that course to complete the Development within Diverse Communities requirement? Thank you for your quick action in making this change happen.

Lynn

Lynn,

The proposal to include the HDFS minor as an option for special education students is attached. Could you let me know if you support the proposal or if you have any edits?

Thanks!
