List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum. How do they support the overall program objectives of the major/minor/concentrations)?

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

None

Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: http://www.ugs.udel.edu/gened/

The proposed changes will primarily impact goal number 5: Understand the diverse ways of thinking that underlie the search for knowledge in the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences. Early Childhood Education (ECE) majors will have the opportunity to take a wider variety of courses within the four content areas listed within goal 5.

Identify other units affected by the proposed changes:

(Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

None

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The majority of the changes will involve breadth requirements and will align with the requirements adopted by the Faculty Senate that will be implemented beginning in the fall of 2010. Accreditation requirements both for the state of Delaware and for standards for the National Association for the Education of Young Children and for the Council for Exceptional Children (the two specialty professional organizations for the ECE program) do not require specific content courses for teacher education programs. The revised program changes will allow ECE majors to choose from a wider variety of courses in the four breadth areas. Students will be able to transfer more easily into the major, as well as being able to have more AP courses count towards specific requirements.

The two primary math courses (MATH 251 and MATH 252 or 253) that have been required in the past will continue to be required. However, students will now be required to earn a C- or better in MATH 251. Previously, students only had to pass the course. This change was in response to data that showed that a large number of ECE majors were not demonstrating competencies in the content this math course covers. The third math elective will no longer be required because it did not provide ECE majors with math content knowledge that was essential for teaching young children.

The final change is that HDFS 101 Introduction to Human Services and Cultural Competence will no longer be the required Freshman Year Experience course for ECE majors. This course will no longer be offered because the content is covered in other courses within the ECE major.

MUED 390 Music in Early Childhood will be replaced by a choice of courses that will be available in the HDFS department office and will be called a “Focused Elective.” The choices will be from a list of courses that will allow ECE majors to select a course that covers a topic of interest to them. ECE majors will complete a form to select the course prior to taking it.
