List program changes for curriculum revisions:

We are deleting the course requirement of Econ 302 as a major/minor requirement for BA/BS in Economics and BA in Economics Education.  By doing so we also need to change the credits required. We are making several changes simultaneously.

List new courses required for the new or revised curriculum:

(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)

None.

Other affected units:

(List other departments affected by this new or revised curriculum.  Attach permission from the affected units.  If no other unit is affected, enter “None”)

None.

Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

We are deleting the course requirement of Econ 302 as a major/minor requirement for BA/BS in Economics and BA in Economics Education.  By doing so we also need to change the credits required. We are making several changes simultaneously.

Justification:

The decision to require ECON302 - Banking and Monetary Theory,  was
implemented many years ago.  Advances in macroeconomic theory have
fundamentally changed the approach to teaching macroeconomics in ways
that no longer require ECON302 as a prerequisite.  Therefore, the course
no longer fits our major's needs.

A survey of similar and liberal arts colleges found that none (of 10
surveyed) requires a course similar to our ECON302, which further
supports the assertion that requiring ECON302 is not consistent with
current curriculum practices in economics.

ECON302 will still be offered as an elective for ECON majors and
non-majors.  Some will also be directed towards more advanced courses
which build on the material taught in ECON302, such as ECON430 -Advanced
Macroeconomic Theory, ECON435 - Contemporary Macroeconomic Theory, and
ECON443 - International Monetary Economics.

Program Requirements:

(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog.  If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the present curriculum.)
