The new courses required for the Global Enterprise Technologies Minor are listed below.  Each of these courses supports the overall program objectives of:

•          MISY300 The Business Value of IT:  Supports program objectives 1, 2 and 3.  Students learn to understand, analyze, and articulate the ways in which information technology can create business value.Includes concepts such as TCO, ROI, NPV, analyzing strategic fit and IT investment risk along with discussions of issues impacting the introduction of global information systems into organizations.   Open to MIS Majors and GET Minors Only.  

•          MISY375 GET Immersion Experience Internship:Supports all of the program goals.  Fully supervised internship within a large and complex enterprise over an 8 month period of time.  Documented project deliverables and learning outcomes. Students complete a learning contract with their on-site manager, participate in scheduled residencies with university faculty and review progress with a faculty advisor.  PREREQ:  MISY300 and MISY330. Open to MIS Majors and GET Minors Only. 

•          MISY370 Large IT Projects:  Business & IT View:Supports all of the program goals. Exposes students to challenges of large IT projects from two perspectives:  the software development life cycle and the business modeling of IT projects. Students learn to model the value of IT, measure IT risk and how the software development life cycle operates. Immersion Program Only.  PREREQ:  MISY300 and MISY330. Open to MIS Majors and GET Minors Only. 

•          MISY420 Global IT Enabled Innovation and Change:  Supports all of the program goals. Student interns learn how todevelop a strategic approach to technology innovation and change; understand organizational implications of innovation; present innovative ideas to senior management. Learn to understand the use of IT to solve a problem or create a competitive advantage. Immersion Program Only.  PREREQ:  MISY300 and MISY330. CO-REQ: MISY421. Open to MIS Majors and GET Minors Only. 

•          MISY421 Global Business Communications:  Supports program goal 5.Principles and practices for effective communication and collaboration in a global enterprise, includes formal presentations, conducting meetings, preparing written summaries and providing clear electronic messaging. Integrates theoretical foundations and practical guidance with real world experiences in communicating effectively in the global workplace.  Immersion Program Only. CO-REQ:  MISY420.

•          MISY437 Large Scale IT Projects I: (fall) Supports all of the program goals. Students learn how todevelop a strategic approach to technology innovation and change; understand organizational implications of innovation; present innovative ideas to senior management. Learn to understand the use of IT to solve a problem or create a competitive advantage.  PREREQ: MISY430 or CISC475.   CO-REQ:  MISY439.  Open to MIS Majors and GET Minors Only. 

•          MISY439Large Scale Projects II: (spring) Supports all of the program goals. Students will be involved in a large scale systems project at a participating GET company.  Topics will include project management, applying the systems development life cycle, leveraging technology to solve a global business problem.  Students will present innovative ideas and solutions to senior management.  CO-REQ:  MISY437. 

•          MISY380 Enterprise Resource Planning Systems:  Supports all of the program goals.  Focuses on large scale enterprise resource planning systems, their development, functionality, and implementation. Students configure a company on a live system. Delivery of ERP systems, such as hosted environments, is explored, as well as, business intelligence tools for analysis of enterprise data. PREREQ:  MISY261.  Open to MIS majors and minors, Information Systems majors and GET minors only.

•          MISY385 Interoperable Information Systems: Supports program goals 1 and 2.  Focuses on the development of interoperable information systems. Coverage will include: syntactic interoperability (exchanging data), semantic interoperability (the interpretation of information), open source software, and standards such as XML. PREREQ:  MISY261.  Open to MIS majors and minors, Information Systems majors and GET minors only.

Goal 1:  Attain effective skills in (a) oral and (b) written communication, (c) quantitative reasoning, and (d) the use of information technology.  The Global Enterprise Technologies (GET) Minor supports items (a), (b) and (d) of Goal #1.  All of the courses required by the GET Minor require oral and written communications, as well as, the use of information technology.

Goal 2:  Learn to think critically to solve problems.  The experiences offered throughout the GET Minor through coursework, internships, or consulting projects challenge the student to think critically to solve problems.

Goal 3:  Be able to work and learn both independently and collaboratively.  Many of the courses in the GET Minor require the students to work independently on assignments and projects, as well as, engage in team projects and other collaborative assignments. 

 

Goal 5:  Understand the diverse ways of thinking that underlie the search for knowledge in the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences. The GET Minor is designed for students of all majors and disciplines in the university.  The Immersion Internships and the Large Scale Projects classes require students to participate on interdisciplinary teams.  Students will need to consider the perspectives of their team members and their clients when developing solutions to technology problems in large organizations. 


Goal 6:  Develop the intellectual curiosity, confidence, and engagement that will lead to lifelong learning.   The GET Minor will challenge students to design innovative solutions to problems facing large organizations.  They will constantly be engaged in learning new technologies.

 

Goal 7:  Develop the ability to integrate academic knowledge with experiences that extend the boundaries of the classroom. The GET Minor provides students with the option to participate in a long-term internship or to participate in a two-semester technology project with a large, complex organization. 

 

Goal 10:  Develop an international perspective in order to live and work effectively in an increasingly global society.  The GET Minor is focused on providing students with the knowledge and understanding necessary to solve technology problems or implement technology projects in global organizations.

The curriculum for the Global Enterprise Technologies Minor includes 3 optional computer science classes (CISC437 Database Systems, CISC475 Advanced Software Engineering, CISC483 Introduction to Data Mining) in order to make the program more accessible to Computer Science majors.  The support letter from the Department of Computer and Information Sciences is attached. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Describe the rationale for the proposed program change(s):

The objective of the Global Enterprise Technologies (GET) Minor is to extend the education of undergraduate students, in all majors across the university, in the use and deployment of large scale systems in global organizations to solve complex problems. The GET minor is a specialized minor for those students interested in working with large scale systems in global organizations.  Our alumni, employers who recruit our students, and our current students who return from internships, report that a program is needed that addresses the issues of scalability, globalization and enterprise resources planning systems. We conducted a survey of major employers of our students regarding the creation of the global enterprise technologies minor.  The feedback on the survey and the support for the program was very positive.  We also held a faculty meeting with our Department Advisory Board where the proposed GET minor was presented. The Advisory Board was very supportive of developing the Global Enterprise Technologies minor.  All of the parties mentioned note that our students need to understand issues with large scale systems and have more experience working with these systems in large organizations, through internships or capstone consulting classes.  We also have the opportunity to partner with JPMorgan Chase in the development of the global enterprise technologies curriculum and the creation of the immersion (8 month) internship experiences for our students.  The GET minor is also very accessible to students outside of the Lerner College of Business and Economics.  The GET minor will prepare students for technology careers in global enterprises.

MINOR IN GLOBAL ENTERPRISE TECHNOLOGIES (GET)

The GET Minor is designed to extend the education of undergraduate students, in all majors across the university, in the use and deployment of large scale systems in global organizations to solve complex problems.  Applications to be admitted into the GET Minor are submitted on-line through UDSIS.  Students who would like to participate in the Immersion Option must also submit an application to companies offering extended internships through the GET program. The minor requires seven courses, with a grade of C or better.
