Dear Deb,

Thanks for explaining about the courses—we will save your email below, and hope that it will work to explain why the courses aren’t on the challenge list.  There is one other issue regarding your proposal.  It didn’t have the new University Breadth requirements listed on it….most of the major revisions proposals that we have reviewed this year did not include them (it takes effect in 2010-11).  (I’ve included the text of the new requirement below).  So one thing you will need to do in a revised proposal is to include the University Breadth (It would belong on a list with the Multicultural requirements and with E110).

The second issue is more difficult; it has to do with College level breadth.  On March 15th, A&S is considering a proposal to let the University Breadth course lists be used to fulfill A&S College-level breadth requirements (the current A, B, C, D).  Other colleges (e.g., Ag, Business, Engineering) have done this at the UGS committee’s guidance—when there are college level breadth requirements, we have asked colleges to revise their proposals to show that college level breadth use the University lists (rather than college-idiosyncratic lists).   So, A&S is considering this now, and we are waiting to see what happens there.  However, I’m not sure if it will pass…so I’m not sure (yet) what this means for your proposal.  Sorry to be equivocal—I think there are some strong opinions on both sides, and I can’t foresee whether it will be a problem for your proposal or not.

I have to run now, but I will be available by phone if needed:  x8377.

Beth

p.s. the good news is that our committee had no issues with the content or rationale for your proposal, which are both strong.

Beth,

Please see Message Below concerning English Education.  I tried to help with this one since she sent me an email.  I'm not sure I communicated what the problem actually is, but I tried.

Please let me know what needs to be done now.  Thanks!

Thank you, Karren.  No, I didn’t receive any emails from Beth (I have been on super-hawk mode regarding this proposal, so I wouldn’t have missed it).

In any case, last summer, I completed a New Course webform only for ENGL295 (not ENGL395 or EDUC421) because Cindi Shenkle explicitly told me that since we will not be offering ENGL395 or EDUC421 for a few years, I should wait until Summer of 2011 or 2012 to complete New Course webforms for those two courses.  She said that administrators do not want courses to be listed too much before they are going to be offered.

I hope this helps.  Please let me know if there’s anything else I need to do.
