I believe that faculty members have an obligation to perform important service activities regularly as part of their duties.  Serving on the Faculty Senate is among the most important of these activities.  The faculty, through the Senate, is entrusted with many important responsibilities and privileges.  These responsibilities must be carried out proficiently for the university to fulfill its mission successfully. Well-done service by faculty is as vital to the university’s well-being as is teaching, scholarship or administration.

I have been privileged to serve in the Senate for five years and have strived to contribute constructively and diligently to its operation of fulfilling faculty responsibilities and asserting faculty privileges. I have served as a member of the Undergraduate Studies Committee for two years to gain experience reviewing undergraduate curricular changes, academic programs, and undergraduate majors for the university.  I also have served as a longstanding member of the CAS Educational Affairs Committee, which considers and approves academic programs and courses for the largest and most curricularly diverse college in the university.

As President of the Faculty Senate, I would continue to serve the university by ensuring that the Senate fulfills its many responsibilities and maintains its ability to assert those privileges granted to the faculty by the Board of Trustees.
